All State Fire bodies are excellent resources for fire information, prevention and control.
Much has been said in recent times about the “Stay and Defend, or Go Early” maxim of fire prevention. The Firebunker is not designed to offer residents an additional incentive to remain under the threat of fire, but to offer a vital alternative if residents find themselves unable to leave.
In either new or existing constructions, the Firebunker is best located near the main property structure (usually the primary residence) for ease of access rather than underneath as in a cellar or basement. This is due to the fact that if the residence does succumb to fire, it represents a significant fuel source that will combust above the Firebunker for a more prolonged period of time compared to that of a grassed or sparse ground area as well as presenting a potential hazard for exiting the Firebunker due to falling debris. Whilst residences do contain materials that are combustible, all State Fire authorities are unanimous in maintaining that they still represent the best option for survival in the event that escape is not possible. As a result, the Firebunker is best located near these structures for ease of access in the event of fire proximity.
The design of the Firebunker is made up of pre-fabricated flame retardant concrete panels. The Firebunker is ideally located underground where most fires are unable to travel or don’t due to limited oxygen and fuel sources. In addition to the structure, Fire Bunkers also offers air canisters, battery powered lighting, UHF Radios, a solar powered facility, and other survival accessories. Due to the relatively rapid transition of fire fronts, the Firebunker is meant to be a short term survival location with the intended confinement limited. However, appropriately equipped, the Firebunker has been designed to accommodate up to 6 people for up to 5 hours.
